Pandir is the Ascendant of the Kallicot Citadel, and to say that he is unpopular is putting it mildly. That central theme is what this book is based on, with plot lines that involve class and caste issues, discovery of forbidden love, and more. The author weaves all these threads into a story that is complex at times, yet very much applicable to social issues that have existed and continue to exist in our world.
I was somewhat intimidated by the size of this work and delayed reading it for that reason. Once I started, however, I was able to go through most of it in fairly good time. I have to admit to a personal preference bias with what I read: overabundance of details and descriptive scenery turns me off. This author, I feel, tries to give the reader an equivalent of a visual setting for the scenes in his work. Other readers may appreciate that more than I. I was intrigued by the mix of a what-if future, technology, and an almost regressive feudalist world. The additions of human nature, politics, and more enhanced my interest and I know of few other works that pull such an eclectic blend off. Overall, I found this worth reading and admit that I am curious about the rest of the series.… (mais)
