I haven't read the first book in this series, so don't know how that affects my opinion. So I'll just, as they say, go with what I know.

Pandir is the Ascendant of the Kallicot Citadel, and to say that he is unpopular is putting it mildly. That central theme is what this book is based on, with plot lines that involve class and caste issues, discovery of forbidden love, and more. The author weaves all these threads into a story that is complex at times, yet very much applicable to social issues that have existed and continue to exist in our world.

I was somewhat intimidated by the size of this work and delayed reading it for that reason. Once I started, however, I was able to go through most of it in fairly good time. I have to admit to a personal preference bias with what I read: overabundance of details and descriptive scenery turns me off. This author, I feel, tries to give the reader an equivalent of a visual setting for the scenes in his work. Other readers may appreciate that more than I. I was intrigued by the mix of a what-if future, technology, and an almost regressive feudalist world. The additions of human nature, politics, and more enhanced my interest and I know of few other works that pull such an eclectic blend off. Overall, I found this worth reading and admit that I am curious about the rest of the series.

I loved this story! It was a refreshing take on the old "here's a strange door leading to a whole other world" idea. Bess is trapped in the basement and escapes through a strange door in the wall that leads her to a world vastly unlike the the one of traffic and cell phones and lots of people she is used to. She has escaped from the man with a shotgun in her world to be chased by men on horseback with swords and a bad attitude toward strangers. And then things get really weird.

Cloaks was an amazing book! It caught my attention from the first line, as my initial thought was “What am I getting myself into!” The characters were extraordinary, but not unbelievable. Bess showed courage and spunk, but also a goodness that inspired others. Her adventure was compelling as she learned to trust others, was driven to repay the kindnesses shown her, and took enormous risks as a result of both. Heldrick was the perfect mysterious character, absolutely amazing! Their adventure was exciting and suspenseful. The interaction between the two worlds was also delightful. And the ending made me cry, as I was incredibly moved by the friendship that had been built between the main characters, and the ways that friendship had changed them both for the better. I recommend this book to teens and adults, or anyone who loves a good and honorable adventure.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Just finished reading this book, and I enjoyed it. Great premise, good pace. Although the use of different names took some getting used to, I found myself getting caught up in the story pretty quickly. I would definitely want to continue reading other novels in the series.
