The "Firebird Song" storyline has a good pace. The fantasy world sometimes lacked imagination--a character was called Wild Woman and they referred to an event called the Terrible Thing. My biggest problem with the book was the characters. The two main young characters are a bit hyper and reactive. When Prewitt witnesses his grandmother voluntarily sacrifice herself by singing, he realizes he can't battle a group of men by himself, but he yells at his father over and over--"You have to help her!" "How could you let them do that?""You could have stopped them!" "You should have done something!""You should have been here!" His father would also have been alone against an army of men. A smarter pre-teen would have realized his father couldn't stop what the grandmother started. The other main character, Calliope, has similar character flaws. The bookkeeper was equally obnoxious with his own braggadocious character flaws. If the author had counted the number of exclamation points used, I believe she would have realized there was a problem with over-acting in the book.… (mais)
