Ian Frazier & Carmela Ciuraru (rescheduled date!) Thursday, November 8, 7:30 PM (Rescheduled from October 30!) Ian Frazier discusses The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days with author Carmela CiuraruAward-winning humor and nonfiction writer Ian Frazier (author of Coyote vs. Acme, On the Rez, and many other titles) has created an uproarious first novel, The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days, based on his widely read columns for The New Yorker. Structured as a daybook of sorts, the book follows the Cursing Mommy — beleaguered wife of Larry and mother of two boys, twelve and eight — as she tries (more or less) valiantly to offer tips on how to do various tasks around the home, only to end up on the ground, cursing, surrounded by broken glass. Her voice is somewhere between Phyllis Diller’s and Sylvia Plath’s: a hilariously desperate housewife with a taste for swearing and large glasses of red wine, who speaks to the frustrations of everyday life. Frazier will talk about the book, his writing and motherhood with journalist, author and critic Carmela Ciuraru, author of Nom de plume (and a Fort Greene mom).
Note: this event was initially scheduled for October 30 and was rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy. Thank you for your understanding.

Ian Frazier - The Cursing Mommy's Book of Days --- at the Washington Post at The Washington Post 1150 15th Street, NW Metro: Farragut North Ian FrazierFrazier, like The New Yorker where he’s long been a staff writer, is as likely to produce serious nonfiction (Travels to Siberia, Great Plains) as he is lighter fare. His novel, The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $25), features a harried mother of two little boys, doing all she can to keep order. But the domestic center cannot hold, and eventually she collapses in a mess of despair, red wine, and broken glass. This event is co-sponsored with Washington Post Live.
This event is free, but requires registration. Click here to register. Books will be sold on-site by Politics & Prose.

Ian Frazier -- The Cursing Mommy's Book of Days -- Gables Based on his widely read columns for The New Yorker, Ian Frazier’s uproarious first novel, The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, $24), centers on a profoundly memorable character, sprung from an impressively fertile imagination. Structured as a daybook of sorts, the book follows the Cursing Mommy—beleaguered wife of Larry and mother of two boys, twelve and eight—as she tries (more or less) valiantly to offer tips on how to do various tasks around the home, only to end up on the ground, cursing, surrounded by broken glass. Her voice is somewhere between Phyllis Diller’s and Sylvia Plath’s: a hilariously desperate housewife with a taste for swearing and large glasses of red wine, who speaks to the frustrations of everyday life. Frazier has demonstrated an astonishing ability to operate with ease in a variety of registers. Here, Frazier tackles another genre with his usual grace and aplomb, as well as an extra helping of his trademark wicked wit. The Cursing Mommy’s failures and weaknesses are our own—and Frazier gives them a loving, satirical spin that is uniquely his own.
