When an on-the-job incident sends her home to her family's Hill Country ranch, Detective Aubrey Cavanaugh wants to hide away with a good bottle of vodka to ease her mind and her guilt.

She doesn't want to deal with family, friends, and least of all her former lover, Erich Harlan, who is now the ranch foreman.

Erich Harlan has his hands full with overseeing the ranch while Aubrey's parents are away. But he can see she is hurting. He might be the last person she'd turn to, but he won't give up until he knows what's causing her pain and how to make it go away.

After a dozen years apart, will she be willing to find Sanctuary with the Cowboy?

This is a novella with a tenuous link to Christmas - Aubrey returns to her parents' ranch earlier than normal for Christmas and seems to be in no rush to leave, whereas the last few years have seen her visits getting shorter and shorter. Erich picks her up from the airport and is concerned as to her level of drinking before she's already left the airport.

To break down her desire to drink rather than talk her breaks down her defences to find out what happened whilst on the job in the big city. The desire they felt before for each other returns, and that, along with the ranch (and a standoff with the bad guys) brings a little peace to her life.

This was an okay read for me. It was quite entertaining but it had many places where I felt that the book dragged on. I love books where people have sex but then they find out that they have to work in close quarters. The book was interesting but it fell short on character development for me and I felt that it was a little strange and they annoyed me to no end. It was okay and I would definitely read more from this author in the future.

Cassidy is a tough woman--a stubborn woman, really. I think she's a little too stubborn for her own good. Yes, she's had a rough life and dreams of freedom. She craves a life full of traveling adventures--anywhere but Texas. For as long as she can remember, she has been responsible for the care of her irresponsible alcoholic mother.

Grady is a man who's back from his time overseas in the service. He's willing to be involved in running the family ranch. He develops an interest in Cassidy, but discovers that she has no desire to stick around.

It takes time, but the two do develop real feelings for each other. Cassidy breaks things off due to her desire to leave. She doesn't want Grady involved in her mess of a life, nor does she want to be stuck in Texas. When her mother screws up again, she's frustrated...to the point where she probably would like to strangle her mother!

But she comes to realize that she isn't necessarily doomed to a dull boring life. She re-evaluates her life, her choices, and her ultimate desires.
