Basically a very long digression on an essay Fried previously wrote. The chapter on portraiture is terrific, self-contained and led me to want to take up portraiture. But the rest, what I read of it, makes the case for photography's importance on the very criteria that I hate the other visual arts, namely that a handful of contemporary photographers are making self-referential work that plumbs the depth of what art is. Which makes for pretty boring art, if that's the way you're going to look at it.… (mais)

Psychoanalytic reading of Thomas Eakins and Stephen Crane, playing with their unconscious thematization of their chosen media (painting, writing) in major works of the post-Civil War US. Fascinating and important book for American art historiography. Fried is one of the most interesting writers in art and literary criticism of the past 40 years. However, I feel some elements of this book haven't aged that well.
