Volume 2 of "Hike Los Angeles" contains information about 53 hikes in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Verdugo and Santa Susana Mountains, the San Fernando Valley, and a few in the more eastern portions of Los Angeles County. Even though this was first written in 1985 and the Los Angeles mountains are constantly changing due to fire, flood and development, this guide is still surprisingly relevant. Gagnon is a good writer and each hike he's included has a little historical background, info on any noteworthy flora, fauna, and geological features you may encounter. Of course, he provides directions for how to get to the starting point and instructions for the route of the hike.
