supernatural, mystery series em Name that Book (Junho 2011)

a minor shapeshifter is caught up in a more major battle between the faerie courts. Her human persona of a PI is useful, and she's recruited to a supernatural agency dedicated to preserving the balance. But she has to manage both worlds and responsibilities with powerful gods in the offing and family secrets and legacies lurking in the background.

I like these sort of power imbalances, and have hope that the rest of the series will remain the same.

Sloppy writing! Freaking 3 pages ago you talk about the chick wearing pants and now her legs are showing from the slit in her skirt? Sloppy, people, sloppy. Especially for a fully priced $7.99 Kindle book.

I am done with this book. I have absolutely no interest in this character or her 'voice'. IMO, there was no emotion to her. The entire book felt like the inner voice that was used just listed off a series of things she was doing. This-happened-and-I-was-scared. THere didn't seem to be any expansion of the emotion after that. Ugh and double-ugh.

I stopped after a scene where a woman comes in to get a protection charm and when Cicely 'sees' that she is a victim of spousal abuse, she didn't even try to put any extra into the charm (although she did return her money) and there was zero feelings of sisterhood. She actually did a can't-save-everybody mental shrug that turned me so far off that I may not even pick up another of the writer's books.

My Goodreads Updates

"Is it me?
"...Cicely. I'm afraid that if you don't have sex tonight, you'll get sick." Really? Seriously, is Ms. Galenorn a Laurell K. Hamilton wannabe?

Ugh, ugh and double ugh. Cause Cicely already drowns her sorrows in sex to the point of imagining what an unconscious friend (who needs help not to die) would be like in the sack. I'm stuck because the plot/story premise is so good, but she's about to lose me"

"I don't like making the character do stupid things to serve the plot. This book seems to take that as the main model. Big ugh to that.
I also need to like the characters a bit more. They seem so...flat. 'I did this and he did that". "I love him so much so let's f*#k". Really? Thats all the emotion the writing has conveyed so far. Definately not Cat & Bones or Barron & Mac whemo"

My Kindle Notes and Highlights (expressing much frustration)

And whatever I could do to keep Myst from destroying the joy of summer, I would willingly do.
Note: Lets hope she starts being MUCH more of a thinker from this point. She hasnt been the brightest bulb

I found myself walking off the path, mesmerized by her sudden appearance. Krystal, my mother.
Note: What an idiot

I know that Lannan just wants to watch me in something like this.
Note: So why wear it? The dumbass moves that are put in to advance the plot don't work for me

As she held the sign, I pounded it into the ground, first scooping away a good foot of snow to reach the dirt.
Note: Wow, they must be strong. Its the middle of winter and the ground is frozen

There is a part of me that feels like Menolly got cheated since she didn't get a final book of her own, but I suppose it was time to bring things to an end. This book is told from the viewpoints of all three sisters and serves to end the story arc. All loose ends are tied and the sisters get a chance at a somewhat normal life. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and will miss spending time with these characters. It's sad to see it come to a close, but I appreciate the author leaving us with a definite ending.… (mais)

Camille, a moon witch, half-faerie and owner of a bookstore works for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Call it a police unit for denizens of Otherworld. When a gentle giant gets killed near one of the portals to Otherworld, things start to get dicey. Camille and her two sisters, Menolly (a newly turned vampire) and Delilah (werecat), have to solve a case that involves demons, immortals, portal keys and well... pretty much everything their faulty half-faerie magic cant handle.

My take on the book:

While I enjoyed the book for the most part, I'm not fully convinced.
I've read other books by the author which I enjoyed a lot more. Nevertheless, there is certainly potential in this series: the plot is great, the characters are diverse and with already 20 books out, it cant be bad right?

So what didn't I like?
Well... it was.. a lot of the same. We had the same history, sentences (concerning her magic for example) over and over again and other descriptions were a tad overkill. Describing the world is super and makes it very immersive for the reader, but put too much of it in the book and it tends to stagnate and get boring.

Character development was decent. We got to know the sisters a bit, their family connection (Earthside and Otherworld) and we met a big part of the cast. I cant say we know anyone well, but rather only superficially.
From the support cast I like Smokey best... that dragon... man, I hope we get to see a lot more of him! :D

As I've stated earlier the many descriptions kind of threw a wrench in the flow of the book which was a shame as we didn't get too much action in this first instalment and as such were left with a lot of talking, descriptions of what Camille was wearing, another history lesson or warning that her magic might backfire and last but not least, some sex.

Since I already have some of the following books in the series I will read them at some point.
The plot is great, I just hope we got all of the descriptive world building and history lessons out of the way. Fingers crossed!
