The Historical Austen offers insightful deconstructive readings of Jane Austen’s novels. Unfortunately, Galperin’s prose suffers from a serious case of dissertation disease, that is prose designed to impress by making the argument as impenetrable as possible, especially in discussing theory. But once he gets into the details of the novels, he argues persuasively for some original interpretations. He rescues Willoughby’s reputation in Sense and Sensibility by showing that Colonel Brandon is a self-interested tattletale. In Pride and Prejudice, he says Austen treats Darcy and his estate picturesquely. Thus, when Elizabeth visits there, she puts herself in the picture by imagining herself as mistress of the place, robbing her of much of her agency. In discussing Emma, he points to some evidence that Mr. Knightly may have had a romantic relationship with Miss. Bates and that Emma may be sexually attracted to Harriet. When Anne Eliot rekindles her romance with Captain Wentworth and regains her youthful bloom, she becomes a traditional romantic heroine but loses some of the freedom she had as a self-acknowledged spinster. The book is worth reading, you can wade through it. 4 stars.… (mais)
