There are undoubtedly numerous books that could (and will) be written analyzing and criticizing the administration of Donald Trump. Mr. Garrett's lazy and malevolent calumniation is not such a book. It contains many items of interest regarding Trump's campaign and first two years in office, but very little that has not been covered before, and much that is utterly false. Any such examination of a presidential campaign (such as those written by Theodore White, Jack Germond, and Jules Witcover) will be full of anecdotes, quotations, and, hopefully, honest and historically valuable conclusions. Garrett is competent enough at gathering the minutiae, but he uses only what will serve his overriding motivation, which is an animus against Trump that is so unprofessional as to be embarrassing. Garrett's failure here is not that he is a "typical liberal" (hardly a unique designation in the American press). His failure is that, despite a long and superficially impressive journalistic career, he seems unable to overcome his oddly personal loathing of President Trump, and has written an ostensibly thoughtful, but ultimately disingenuous volume that discredits not only him, but his profession. Garrett has written several worthwhile books in the past, and made numerous contributions to legitimate journalism. This volume is beneath him.

Not recommended.

Esteemed reporter Major Garrett takes a look at Trump's first year in his presidency by closely examining certain issues he had to deal with such as health care, tax reform, his attorney general Jeff Sessions, the firing of FBI director James Comey, environmental regulations and immigration. This is not a pro- or anti-Trump book, but a more serious piece of journalism looking at the issues of that time period and Trump's contributions to each. 2020 will be an interesting election as by then we will have more of an understanding of who Trump really is based on the various conclusions of several investigations. This book also provides the reader with a greater understanding of Trump and his positions, something that too often is lost in the noise surrounding his outrageous behavior.… (mais)

This book was well and cleverly written by Major Garrett with never a hint of his politics. He used varied sources on both sides of the aisle and the issue to discuss the first two years of the Trump Presidency. In reading this, the importance of being a well-informed citizen kept going through my mind -- we need to be well informed on all sides of issues so that we can have civil discourse - something that our founding fathers urged.
If you are a follower of Major Garrett or not, you should read this book.… (mais)
