Among several museum associations over nearly 30 years, Garver served as founding director of what is now California's Orange County Museum of Art and later was director 1980-1987 of what is now the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. He subsequently organized art exhibitions for several museums and companies, including building the art collection of the former Rayovac Corporation. Following Link's death, Garver became the organizing curator of the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, Va., which opened in 2004 in Roanoke's former N&W passenger station.

Garver was also a noted author, first of a 1985 monograph about the American figurative artist George Tooker, and later of a definitive work on Link, The Last Steam Railroad in North America, published in 1995 by Harry N. Abrams, Inc.

Beyond his work in the art world, Garver volunteered at Madison's Second Harvest food bank and Agrace Hospice, was active in the First Unitarian Society of Madison, served on the city of Madison's Alcohol License Review Committee, and was a board member for Wright in Wisconsin, an organization promoting the legacy of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

A large (10" x 11"), almost square format paperback with fold out cover which is illustrated throughout predominantly in full colour. Following the introduction which provides a brief biography of the artist, the books proceeds to consider the paintings chronologically. Each painting is discussed in detail; the intelligent and accessible commentary taking into account relevant events in the artist's life that might bear influence on the work. The book concludes with an illustrated (black and white) catalogue raisonne of paintings, a list of exhibitions and a selected bibliography.

This is a splendid book, beautifully presented; it is well laid out and with many if the images presented against a neutral grey page background which well suites the work. The book designer should be commended too for arranging the text alongside, or within a page of, the images to which to it refers; without compromising the layout (other publishers and designers please take note - it can be done!).

The book contains over 145 paintings of which more than 85 are in full colour, most of the latter are half to full page size. The printing is excellent and well conveys the subtle delicacy of the paintings as well as the luminosity of the paint surface; with the result that the images truly glow out from the page.

Being a selection of the paintings of a twentieth-century representational artist whose work is redolent of a symbolist Edward Hopper who used a similar approach to figure painting as Thos. Hart Benson. The results I found quite affecting and am glad to have this compilation.

This is the catalogue of an exhibit shown at six museums from April 1992 until August 1993, organized by Thomas Garver. His interest "was in investigating how artists have used animals in 'discontinuous' or 'illogical' ways - approaches that are at variance with what we regard as objective observation and documentation."

There is a short biography of each of the 14 artists whose works are shown. The pictures, sharing the common theme of animals, are varied and interesting.
