Be prepared for a detailed discussion of Bach's voluminous work. This is written by a German musicologist, and while this is biography, it is not history. If you love music like I do, you'll find it fascinating. But it is still a challenging read.

(mais)

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) is one of the legendary figures of world culture. But who is the man behind the legend? Martin Geck offers a vivid portrait of a difficult but fascinating man with a tangled and still controversial love life. This is an expert introduction to a self-styled cultural hero, presented warts, genius, and all.

A promotional sampler CD of Peter Sheppard Skaerved playing selected pieces of Beethoven's chamber music is included with the book.

This compact, useful book is handsomely prepared and fortified with multitudinous prints of all sorts. There is a wealth of distilled information about the master's life and music.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was the father of modern music, a supreme craftsman able to bridge the gap between the music of the Renaissance and the glories of Mozart, Hayden, and Beethoven. Bach expert Martin Geck shows us Bach in his time, offering a portrait of the personal, political and social circumstances that shaped some of the greatest music ever written. It analyses Bach's musical achievement and considers why music such as the "Brandenburg Concertos" and the "St. Matthew Passion" continues to hold its appeal centuries later.… (mais)
