About the Author
Martin Gilbert was born in London, England on October 25, 1936. He was sent to Canada during World War II, but returned on a liner bringing American troops to Britain in preparation for D-day. After national service in the intelligence corps, he was educated at Magdalen College at Oxford. He mostrar mais graduated from Oxford in 1960 and wrote his first book entitled The Appeasers. In 1961, after a year of research and writing, he was asked to join a team of researchers working for Winston Churchill. At the age of 25, he was formally inducted into the team, doing all of his own research. Gilbert became known as Churchill's official biographer, but he also wrote books on the Holocaust, the first and second world wars, and Jewish history. During his lifetime, he wrote over 80 books including Winston Churchill, Auschwitz and the Allies, The Holocaust: The Jewish Tragedy, The Jews of Hope: The Plight of Soviet Jewry Today, Shcharansky: Hero of Our Time, Letters to Auntie Fori: The 5,000-Year History of the Jewish People and Their Faith, and In Search of Churchill. A verdade é que ao longo do volume o autor não tem uma única ideia, não faz uma única interpretação, não emite uma única opinião. Factos. Apenas factos. Mas não todos os factos. Sobre Portugal, por exemplo, o autor parece não estar muito informado. A implantação da República em 1910, quando na Europa apenas a França não era monárquica; o advento do Estado-Novo antes da chegada ao poder do nacional – socialismo; o 25 de Abril que pões fim à mais longa ditadura fascista da Europa (que não foi a espanhola como o autor refere no texto) e que deu origem à independência de cinco novos países, são apenas alguns exemplos da história lusa dignos de figurar nesta cronologia e que o autor não menciona.
Também não refere a guerra sino – indiana de 1962; nem a guerra sino – soviética de 1969 em torno da ilha de Zhan Bao no rio Ussuri, nem tão pouco refere o corte de relações entre a URSS e a RPC. Muitos outros acontecimentos deveriam figurar nesta cronologia: as actividades islâmicas de Malcom X e da Irmandade Muçulmana nos EUA; a fome no Biafra; a luta da Haganah para a independência de Israel; o concerto de Woodstock em 1929; o Maio de 1968 em França; os atentados nos Jogos Olímpicos de Munique em 1972; as actividades terroristas dos grupos comunistas armados europeus (AD, CCC, BV, Bader-Meinhoff); os vários alargamentos da CEE; as reformas liberalizantes de Margaret Tatcher e de Pinochet e o preço social dessas reformas; a longa guerra civil em Angola (fala da guerra civil de Moçambique mas não na de Angola). Estas são algumas das falhas que detectei. Provavelmente, outras haverá.
Em conclusão: como cronologia é razoável apesar de incompleta e de poder estar melhor organizada; como livro de História é uma lástima.… (mais)
