Dorothy Edith Gilman was born in New Brunswick, NJ, the daughter of James Bruce, a minister, and Essa (Starkweather) Gilman, and said she decided on a writing career as a child. She attended university as well as fine art schools and became an art teacher and an instructor in creative writing. In 1945, she married Edgar Butters, Jr., a teacher; the couple had two children before divorcing in 1965. Under her married name, Dorothy Gilman Butters, she began publishing children’s books in the late 1940s.

The New York Times said in her obituary: "[Her] best-known heroine, Mrs. Pollifax, is very likely the only spy in literature to belong simultaneously to the Central Intelligence Agency and the local garden club."

The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (1966) was the first novel in what would become a highly popular 14-book series about Mrs. Emily Pollifax, a bored 60-something retired grandmother in search of a bit of adventure in an otherwise mundane life.

Emily Pollifax does it again -- oh no, no spoilers! I don't mean whether her assignment was a triumph or not (use your imagination). I mean that I was once again riveted on every page.

I so appreciate these gutsy tour guides to parts exotic and unknown, the tidbits of history, the depth of how she makes me feel like I am really there. And what fun it is to follow along on Google Maps! I especially appreciate Google's contributors' photographs of the regions that are included.

I also savor the craft that Ms. Gilman displays in her character development and plotting. Great stuff! Not earth-shaking; not literary brilliance. But solid, HIGHLY entertaining adventure, and one of my favorite characters in fiction these days.

Thank you Ms. Gilman, for a much-needed, intelligent escape.

Another improbable yet exciting and very fun adventure with the unsinkable Emily Pollifax. This was super fun because I traced her travels across Türkiye with Google Maps, including some sightseeing with the photos included.

Loved the little twist at the end, although the ending did seem a little rushed. Did Gilman have a deadline pending? Oh, well, it was loads of fun. Beware: These are obviously addictive!

Oh what a delight! Where have you been all my life, Dorothy Gilman & Mrs. Pollifax? Oh, I know the answer to that... I would never have imagined reading a "spy novel." Just not a genre that interests me.

But I am so glad I stumbled across this! Because I love reading about older women breaking out of the mold (especially difficult in the 1960s), and having an adventure or two. Enterprising, somewhat prim, yet steel nerves when it comes to it. She is wonderful, the writing is droll and the plot is mesmerizing. Could not put it down after the first half.

Such fun! Bring on the next one!

Another romp, this time through Zambia ... really liked the pacing of this one, with more showcasing of the exotic scene and the feeling of Africa, with all the action sort of piling up at the end.

Plus: is there romance in the air for Emily?? :)
