Group Read, March 2022: New Grub Street em 1001 Books to read before you die (Março 2022)

This was a Victorian age read so named because it described the women who were not paired with men, the left-overs! I normally like Victorian novels, but Gissing is certainly no Trollope or Hardy. 3 stars barely (so many minor characters that it could be confusing) 285 pages

I read this a few months ago but the characters remain vivid. This is a testament to Gissing's storytelling. He took time to build up the plot and the characters, allowing you to understand how they feel and think. As a result, it's very hard to choose sides. Jasper Milvain may be a villain to break off his engagement with Marian Yule but how do you fault a man who took care of his sisters and has drive and ambition? Amy Yule thinks her husband, Edwin Reardon, didn't try hard enough but we, as readers, know that he did, and how much it took him. If ever you feel that you lack something in your life, read and reflect on the characters in this book. The characters are only too real, in their time. The ugliest conditions of living, and the lowest poverty rules these unfortunate characyers' lives. Still, amidst all the spite that dwells in the hearts of most, there are two or three who dedicate the lighy in their hearts to easing the unhappiness on the lives of those around them. Read this book and find out for yourself; you won't be sorry.
