The author Duncan Gleason wrote The Islands and Ports of California which was published in 1958. I was attracted to this book because of a recent visit to Santa Cruz Island, one of the California Channel Islands. Much has changed since 1958 and this book is quite dated. The part that interested me most was about the islands. Most of the Channel Islands were in private hands or control by the Navy at the time. Now most of the islands are public, part of the Channel Islands National Park. The author reveals a bit of outdated racism in some of his comments about the original Native American inhabitants of California and of the Chinese who came with the Gold Rush. Being a boater, Gleason mentioned every Yacht club that existed in the state up to the time of the book. That part seemed a bit tedious. The parts about the islands and the exploration period held my interest. The book is illustrated with drawings and paintings by the author himself. I thought those were quite good.… (mais)

Very nice history of California's coastal communities, nice large format book with illustrations by the author. Must have in the California History library. Some editions on the market are signed by Dorothy Gleason, the author's first mate and wife.
