Minecraft had one of the fastest rises in popularity of any game in history. The meteoric rise, as well as the team behind the phenomenon was always a mystery to me. The marketing strategy used for propagating Minecraft was one of the most interesting parts of this -- as that was how I learned about it initially as well. Rather than hiring a PR company, people would upload videos of their creations to Youtube, acting as both a way to learn about the game and as avenue for players to show off and build reputation.… (mais)

Markus Persson is the man behind one of the biggest independent games in history, Minecraft.

Better known as Notch to his numerous fans, he has always has a fascination with programming and spend hours of his youth in front of a screen. After school he managed to get a job as a programmer but found that it was too restrictive and with him and another dreamt of having their own company to do the games that they wanted.

The germ of an idea cam from another game, as these things always do, and he started coding for this simple blocky world. All so very different from the slick modern games that are on the market these days. And slowly word got out of his little game where you could create exactly what you wanted. As the sale grew and grew he took the plunge and went into business with two others.

It is fascinating story of his life, and of a gamer who wanted to do it exactly his way. My children spend an awful lot of time on his game, so it was good to find out about the man.

Good, quick read - wish I'd read it before my recent trip to Sweden!

I didn't realize what a phenomena Minecraft was - I've only recently begun learning about it through the version on my Raspberry Pi *and* the Pocket Edition I put on my Fire - it's fascinating, and fun to see what people have done with it!

Even more interesting is arc of the games history and it's creator "Notch." Not quite a Cinderella story - I'd say JK Rowling is a better example of a creation and creator developing well together - but the history of Swedish game development in general and Minecraft's in particular is fascinating.… (mais)

This biography looks at Markus Persson's life and drea,s leading up to the extreme success with Minecraft.

Though younger kids could read this, it is really a middle grade and up book. It looks at his father's and sister's problems with addiction, his own problems fitting into corporate culture (even in smaller companies), and his love for coding. Many of the themes are not for younger readers--if they could even really understand them.

As someone who never sold out--that story is told at the end--Persson is a good role model. Or he could be seen as someone who refused to be a square peg in a round hole. Whether that is good or bad depends on one's point of view. Persson himself managed to follow his dream and to carefully weigh his decisions re: quitting his job and switching companies. Younger readers might only see the daring-ness, and not the prudence.… (mais)
