After graduation from Wellesley College, Gould worked as a crime reporter for The Long Island Star-Journal and then became an editor of several national magazines. In 1955, she married Philip Benjamin, a journalist and novelist, with whom she had two sons. Following his death, she married Dr. Robert E. Gould, a psychiatrist, and took his surname.
