I just adore Jennie’s books. I love her sweet stories, her writing style, her characters, her rich history. I feel that her books are the perfect bridge from Regency era writing and language to modern writing and storytelling. She writes so beautifully, not just in how she puts words together, but in her ability to take difficult situations and work things out for her characters in reasonable and believable ways. And this book did not disappoint.

My heart was endeared to Miles from the get-go. I loved his desire for honesty, even if he didn’t always quite make the mark. His confidence in who he was as a person, and ability to see goodness in others, and his observation skills were all qualities I adored about him. And yet, for all his goodness, he still had things he needed to work on, which I loved.

I liked how Jennie wrote Dorothea’s character. Her desire for a “brilliant” match gave her character a lot of motivation for her actions, and a good chance for a brilliant character arc. I loved how everything worked out in the end, and look forward to the rest of the series.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Narrated by Stevie Zimmerman—I really liked this narrator. Her accents and voices were good, even for the male characters, and I appreciated her inflections and emotions. When a character’s voice cracked, or they were excited, you could hear that in the narration. I would listen to this narrator again and would recommend her to anyone who looks for audiobooks.

I can always count on Jennie Goutet to deliver a thoughtful, deeply romantic, gentle romance that feels entirely new in the Regency Romance genre. This book was a clever twist on love at first meet with reverse Pride and Prejudice vibes. Despite an immediate attraction, there’s a lot of ups and downs on the road to happily ever after.

Lady Dorothea Rowlandson was a character I grew to love. She’s the daughter of a now deceased earl and somewhat lackadaisical mother, who feels the weight of her family’s future on her shoulders. Her brother, the new earl, is only a 13 year old boy who frequently gets into mischief. Dorothea feels the responsibility to secure a good match to a wealthy, titled man so she can provide good matches for her younger sisters and a male guide for her brother. Though she’s intrigued by Miles and feels a definite spark between them, she doesn’t know if she can afford to have him court her.

Miles Shaw is in desperate need of a wealthy wife to help his crumbling estate. I absolutely loved him! He’s extremely honorable, patient, and kind. I loved all his interactions not just with Dorothea, but her entire family, and his handsome, intriguing cousin. He’s also concerned with his mother and siblings’ needs. Though he immediately falls for Dorothea, when he learns she’s in search of a wealthy gentleman, he worries his pursuit of her is in vain. But, each moment he spends with her, he recognizes that she feels the attraction too. Could they make a go of it?

There were quite a few ups and downs in the story and I was honestly curious as to how things would ever work out. Definitely a delightful twist at the end. I listened to the audiobook version and adored the narrator. She really made these characters come alive and I appreciated how she distinguished between them. It was a pleasure to listen to and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook from the author. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided. 4.5 stars raised to 5

A steamless, Heyer-esque romance. Read it on Kindle Unlimited.

A complicated inheritance bring Stratford and Eleanor together. He desires the land that will be hers when she marries and so proposes a marriage of convenience to her. Since he is foxed at the time of proposing and not very complimentary in his words, Eleanor turns him down and leaves for London for her debut. Since Stratford's sisters are to have their come-out that season as well, they are thrown together quite a bit and Stratford begins to value Eleanor for more than the inheritance she will bring.

There is a secondary romance for Eleanor's friend Lydia and a minor sub-plot of unmasking a spy.

I enjoyed the book and will look for more by this author. The only quibble I have was that I felt the second half was a bit long drawn out.

The premise of this novella sounds simple, but I liked the execution of the plot very much.
Lord Nicholas Cranleigh is invited to Cothill Manor, where his sister resides with her husband, for a Christmas ball. There he meets Lavinia Dresden, the daughter of an impoverished gambling addict, who is planning to betroth her to a man he is highly indebted to. Of course this man is a scoundrel and abhorrent in all possible ways.
It seems that Lord Cranleigh's sister wants to try her hand as a matchmaker to save her friend from such a terrible fate. But when he meets Lavinia, he truly falls in love and has only a few days to save her.

This plot is not anything new, but I did love the story - the main characters, the development of their love, the setting of the manor house, and also the narrator of the audiobook, Stevie Zimmermann. There is no steam, but lots of romance, and an atmosphere that feels true to the time it is supposed to take place in. Moreover, even though the book is so short, the story did not feel rushed to me.

I am looking forward to discovering more of this author's work!
