A person can’t go to Buenos Aires without reminders of the famous Eva Peron. So, let’s read up a bit!
This book, though small, focuses well on the many achievements of Maria Eva Durante, born 1919. From her early days as a child whose father died when she was seven, her family’s struggles as the poor working class formulated her beliefs on equality with help for children, elderly, and women. Her passion led to her union with Juan Peron in 1945, his win for the presidency in 1946 when she was 26 years old, and the installation of the many social causes and policies in Argentina. Her contributions were of such significance that when the opposition planned an assassination on her husband in 1949, they included her as a target too.
I was afraid this would be a cheesy book, but it turned out to be very solid on the history of Argentina, the government, the movement of the people, and Eva’s role in it. Her greatest joy was the opening of children and women residential homes (i.e. shelters) led by her foundation. The children bestowed upon her the name Evita, a diminutive of Eva, and she welcomed this title. Her greatest achievement was bringing suffrage to the women of Argentina; she herself voted for the first and last time from her hospital bed. Her early demise at the age of 33 will forever leave the famous Evita as, wait for it, legendary.
Thumbs up!
