It's hard to tell just how seriously this assortment of twaddle was peddled as non-fiction. One crucial chapter has a howler, in that Churchill is described as being First Lord of the Admiralty -- and yet Dr. Graves, who is very specific with the precise date, dates the key meeting involving Churchill-as-First-Lord to two weeks before he became First Lord. There's also the little matter of a South African servant (described alternately as Basuto or Zulu) being fluent in Arabic. And a number of the stories of Graves' derring-do are straight out of the E. Phillips Oppenheim playbook. The few facts extant about "Dr. Graves" was that he was a con artist and a liar. So treat this book as fiction, and sort of a road-company Oppenheim.… (mais)
