Don't read this as a "first" Brontë biography. It's an interesting supplement to more established biographies of Charlotte or of the family – Juliet Barker's or at least Rebecca Fraser's – but is too specialized for the casual reader. That's not to say that it's difficult to understand – Green includes comprehensive enough endnotes for more obscure names (though I think a reader who isn't well-informed on the Brontë family might prefer the addition of a glossary) – but only that its focus is on the less interesting pater familias and that Patrick's children are discussed primarily as ancillaries to Patrick.

Considering that in recent years Patrick's reputation has already been fairly well rehabilitated (by Barker and Fraser, among others) from Elizabeth Gaskell's sometimes harsh treatment, the need for Green's rehabilitation isn't really that great. Of particular interest in Green's biography, though, is his treatment of Patrick as an Anglican cleric (in the evangelical, non-Puseyite wing), given Green's own family background of clerics as well as this biography's Forward by Rowan Williams, the new-retired Archbishop of Canterbury.

As regards the clerical elements of this biography, readers who don't know what I mean by evangelical versus Puseyite, who draw a blank at the Oxford Movement (whose most famous member, until he converted to Rome, was John Henry Newman), and who are unfamiliar with dissenting denominations like Methodists (dissenting, that is, after Methodism's break with Canterbury) and Baptists, would be well-advised to give heavy attention to Green's helpful endnotes and perhaps an occasional reference to Wikipedia.

4**** but not for the casual or first-time reader of Brontëana.

Good factual biography of George Mallory, stuffed through with contemporary content. Its a very straightforward biography, but I have to say that I enjoyed how the other biography, "The Wildest Dream", explored the many facets of this driven and complex man who in many ways was ahead of his time.
