William Alexander Hammond, a former US Army Surgeon General, had this book published in 1879. The purpose of the book was to educate the public that eating is necessary for survival, in response to a number of claims that some people survived for years without food. This may be the first "modern" medical book written on the subject. Although it provides little insight to the disease itself, it does give an interesting portrait of the history of the disease, documenting cases from the middle ages through the 1870s.… (mais)
