Third in the Slough House series (I've read the first so far) which I discovered thanks to the Apple TV+ adaptations. I love the series, and am equally impressed by the source material. In this volume the Slow Horses once again become pawns in the game of the high and mighty in Regents Square and Whitehall. ...and once again the unlikely rag tag band of failed spies come out ahead. A little grittier and more local than the adaptation, this is beautifully written, a seedy world inhabited by flawed characters. I think Mick Herron is the 21st Century's answer to John LeCarre. Important prequel to the slow horses series. Complicated but ultimately worthwhile, especially for understanding the later books in the series.

Sixth book in Slow Horses series. Not recommended if you have not been following the series, but a good implementation of the formula that these books follow.

Her tale of an assignment in Berlin in 1994 is soon revealed to include important backstory for characters in the main Slough House sequence, though it's not clear immediately who and/or how many they are, as they are all referred to with code names. Except David Cartwright, for some reason... The last few chapters come together in a truly satisfying way that takes the series forward in a way I did not expect given its billing as a standalone. I quite liked it!… (mais)
