Easy to read with lovely photographs. Incredibly frustrating though, because there was so little depth. I wanted to know more about just about everything!

Why did she go to Haiti? How did the APP gain power? What was happening in the USA? Tell me more about the helpful people in Canada. How did Julian survive? What happened to his housemates? Why did he fall in love with Celia? Why did Radley's Mom write that last letter and then not mail it? i just needed way more backstory.

Nice thoughts about motherhood.… (mais)

I am amazed at the way this author can tell such a complete story with little poems. Her ability to bring life into historical stories is also astounding. Even though I am not entirely without context for the dust bowl, this book created such a rich description that I feel it so much more real with this telling. The book made me thirsty and so so sad.

I was hesitant to start this book, worried that the short poems might be boring or that it would fail to tell the story. But I loved it, read the whole thing in a day and have such strong emotional attachments to the story and the characters, including the places they loved. This is a piece of history I had never heard about and am so glad that this book exists to try to tell a little bit about how the American government interred people during WWII.
