About the Author

Patricia Highsmith wrote twenty-one novels including "Strangers on a Train" & the "Ripley" series. She died in 1995 in Switzerland, where she resided much of her life. (Publisher Provided) Patricia Highsmith (January 19, 1921 -- February 4, 1995) was an American novelist and short story writer, mostrar mais most widely known for her psychological thrillers, which led to more than two dozen film adaptations. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas. Highsmith grew up with her maternal grandmother in Astoria, Queens, and attended Barnard College. Her first novel, Strangers on a Train (1950), was adapted for stage and screen numerous times, notably by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951. In addition to her acclaimed series about murderer Tom Ripley, which was made into a film in 1955, she wrote many short stories, often macabre, satirical or tinged with black humor. Highsmith liked to examine the ways in which people can get to the point where they are capable of murder, as well as who they become after they have committed a crime. In carefully constructed stories and novels, she integrated this scrutiny of the human psyche into complex plots that often took unexpected twists. In Strangers on a Train, architect Guy Haines meets Charles Bruno on a train. Bruno conceives a plan to have Haines kill Bruno's father, while Bruno will kill Haines's wife. The effect that this plan has on Haines is the focus of the story. Highsmith's awards include: O. Henry Award for best publication of first story, for "The Heroine" in Harper's Bazaar (1946), Grand Prix de Littérature Policière, for The Talented Mr. Ripley (1957), and the Dagger Award -- Category Best Foreign Novel, for The Two Faces of January from the Crime Writers' Association of Great Britain (1964). Highsmith died of aplastic anemia and cancer in Locarno, Switzerland, at age 74. Her last novel, Small G: A Summer Idyll, was published one month after her death in 1995. Patricia Highsmith was born Mary Patricia Plangman in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved with her mother and stepfather to New York City as as small child. She was a voracious reader, and among her early favorites were Sherlock Holmes stories. She also developed an interest in abnormal psychology and read the case studies featured in The Human Mind by Dr. Karl Menninger. She began writing stories as a teenager. She graduated from Barnard College in 1942, and contributed short stories to magazines such as Harper's Bazaar. Her remarkable debut novel, Strangers on a Train, was published in 1950; Alfred Hitchcock adapted the book into a now-classic film the following year.

Her next work, The Price of Salt (1952), published under the pen name Claire Morgan, was a major success. It was republished under her own name in 1990 as Carol. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) launched her most enduring character, Tom Ripley, a charming psychopath. He also was the protagonist of four more novels, including her last book, Ripley Under Water (1991). Highsmith is famous for exploring the dark and morally ambiguous aspects of life in these and other works, including The Blunderer (1954), Deep Water (1957), This Sweet Sickness (1960), The Cry of the Owl (1962), The Tremor of Forgery (1969), and Edith's Diary (1977). In the early 1960s, she moved to Europe, where she led an isolated life. In her career, she published 8 collections of short stories and 22 novels, and is usually classified as one of the great crime writers of all time.

Clever plotting for the amoral and misanthropic Tom Ripley to manoeuvre amidst the high class, or at least rich, expat society of well-to-do Americans in Italy. Finding themselves, living well and dabbling in culture, they maintain an enviable lifestyle that Highsmith depicts in memorable detail. Tom does envy them - he’s brimful with resentments - but he finds a way in, thanks to his “talents”, and likewise to the author’s skill in intricate, but not quite veering into the ludicrous, plotting. The 1999 film (by Anthony Minghella) is very good, in some ways better than the book, but this is still well worth a read.… (mais)

The Mysterious Yearning Secretive Sad Lonely Troubled Confused Loving Musical Gifted Intelligent Beautiful Tender Sensitive Haunted Passionate Talented Mr. Ripley*
Review of the Audible Studios audiobook edition (January 24, 2012) narrated by Kevin Kenerly, of the original Coward McCann hardcover (November 30, 1955).

This was the end of Dickie Greenleaf, he knew. He hated becoming Thomas Ripley again, hated being nobody, hated putting on his old set of habits again, and feeling that people looked down on him and were bored with him unless he put on an act for them like a clown, feeling incompetent and incapable of doing anything with himself except entertaining people for minutes at a time. He hated going back to himself...

This was a re-read in anticipation of the 2024 TV mini-series adaptation coming to Netflix in April 2024. I've read this book several times in my pre-reviewing days and of course a lot of the suspense is lost on a re-read, especially that of the first time, when you don't know if Tom Ripley will actually be able to pull off the impersonation and assumption of the life of Dickie Greenleaf. The young grifter has only done small time mail fraud and petty theft in the past when he suddenly lands an opportunity to try to convince a rich man's son to return home to America to take over the family business. Landing in Italy, he begins to covet his target's lifestyle and finally acts on his impulses.

Despite her breakthrough success with Strangers on a Train (1950) and her queer-positive The Price of Salt, or Carol (1952), Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley has always been my favourite of her books. The insidious way she turns your initial adverse reactions to the character into a gradual increasing wish for the sociopath's success in his deceptions is masterful. It of course helps that his victims are not all that sympathetic to begin with.

* Some of the promos for the 1999 film version flashed / scrolled through this extended title towards the end of the trailer, an example of which you can see here.

It is not something out of the book, but the infectious performance of "Tu Vuò Fa' L'Americano" (You're Acting All American) from the 1999 film adaptation is a delight. See an edited version of the 1999 film segment here and see an original 1959 performance of the song here. Both videos include the Italian lyrics and an English translation in the description texts.

Trivia and Links
The latest adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley will be the Ripley TV series on Netflix starring Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley. The early teaser trailer does not give any details about the plot, so it is hard to say how faithful it will be to the original. Pro-tip: Note the John Malkovich cameo at 0:24 "I like the name". Malkovich himself played Tom Ripley in Ripley's Game (2002) which adapted Ripley's Game (Ripley #3 - 1974).

I thought this was going to be better, more suspenseful. I didn't care for the characters.

A gentle return to the soothing chaos that is Ripley's world. All the classic comforts of his idyllic wealthy life are still there: harp lessons, gardening, and a wife who loves him enough but not too much. Then even amidst the criminal activities that arise, we are treated to a travel interlude, a sojourn Hamburg and Berlin.

Ripley's sudden interest and participation in queer culture was a nice welcome. I prefer to read into it as personal growth on his part from the earlier books. Most of the psychological tension for me stemmed from Frank and his inevitable trajectory. At this point in the series, there's no critical reading on my part anymore. I don't ask how it why. I'm just here to be rocked gently to a pleasant lull.… (mais)
