chick lit - sisters/divorcee holiday em Name that Book (Junho 2013)

I read this one after reading The Hotel Nantucket because some of the characters are in both books and I really enjoyed it.

Adrienne arrives on the island after a recent breakup with her boyfriend and with three rules written on a napkin (1. Become self-sufficient, 2. Do not lie about past and 3. Exercise good judgment about men). While on the ferry to the island, someone tells her she should get a job at the Blue Bistro and that she will make a lot of money there but that it is closing at the end of the summer. She contemplates going there but while she's worked in hotels around the world, she's never worked in a restaurant. She interviews and becomes the hostess at the Bistro.

As she learns how to navigate the restaurant and the rules from the owners, she discovers that she actually really likes working there. She becomes friends with her co-workers and struggles with following her rules - except for becoming self-sufficient, that one is easy.

I really loved reading about her struggles with her rules and embracing the restaurant life.

It's been a while since I've read an Elin book and I've forgotten how much I love her writing. This book was really, really good.

The Hotel Nantucket is based on The Nantucket Hotel. The hotel in the book had a fire in which a chambermaid was killed and her ghost has since haunted the hotel. When a billionaire buys the hotel, he has two goals in mind - to impress two women. One of them is Shelly Carpenter who writes a blog about hotels and resorts. Instead of stars, Shelly gives out keys and the Hotel Nantucket is determined to be the first hotel to receive the coveted 5 keys from Shelly. However, nobody knows when Shelly has checked into the hotel because she does so in disguise.

There is a whole cast of interesting characters in this book and they all have their own story to tell. I've never been to Nantucket but when I read these books, I feel as though I'm on the island. Lizbet is hired as the general manager of the hotel and she in turn hires the rest of the staff - housekeeping, front desk staff, night manager and bellboys. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which has a famous chef at the helm (a character from another of Elin's book, Blue Bistro).

Grace, the ghost, makes several appearances in the book as she flits around the hotel and sees into the guests' (and staff) personal lives.

Summer of '69 is the story of sisters Blair and Kirby and their half-sister, Jessie. Off-season, they live in Boston and in-season, they are on Nantucket. During the summer of 69, Kirby decides she's going to get a job on Martha's Vineyard rather than Nantucket, much to the dismay of her mom and her grandmother. Blair and Kirby's brother, Tiger, has been shipped off to Vietnam. Blair is married and pregnant and stays in Boston. Jessie is forced to take tennis lessons at the "club" which she endures, she meets a 15 year old boy, Pick, who lives in the house behind the big house Jessie and her family live in.

This story touches on everything that was going on that summer - Chappaquidick, the space launch, Woodstock coming up and racial tension. I've always enjoyed Elin's books and this one didn't disappoint.

Great read! I really enjoy all of Elin Hilderbrand's books. This one is about twin sisters, Tabitha and Harper Frost. One twin lives on Nantucket with one parent and the other twin lives on Martha's Vineyard with the other parent. They have not spoken to each other for over a decade. The twins decide to switch islands (and, each others' lives for a brief time) with Harper taking care of Tabitha's teenage daughter and running the store their mother started. Meanwhile, Tabitha takes over Harper's life on her island. There is confusion as some folks either don't know or don't remember that they are twins and one is mistaken for the other. Will they mend their relationship with each other and other relationships they have? Hope so. I'm not going to reveal that - you'll have to read the book to find out.

I love the descriptions of the islands in her books. I have not been to either of the islands but she makes me feel like I've been there. The characters are mostly relatable - I can't relate to upper-crust fashion mavens but it's still a fun read.
