This book starts out slowly and reminds me a bit of The Hunger Games--though there is no competition to see who is taken and who is not. It seems to be the Angel's decision.

Many terms used throughout the book are not well defined, leaving me to have to guess. (For example, given the many uses of d'Ijo at the end of names, I am guessing it has some meaning--but I wasn't able to figure out what that meaning is--other than that those who have it are probably not orphans. Other examples are imrabi, rab'ri, minnabi.)

I did eventually come to care about Josh and what happens to her and to her friends. I didn't guess most of the plot twists. I didn't understand some of the behaviors of certain tithes--though the author's note at the end of the book that discussed "dealing with pain" as a theme for the book makes some of them a little more understandable than they were when I read through the book (using food to dull emotional pain, for example.)
