History of the Catholic Church; From the Apostolic Age to the Third Millenium. James Hitchcock. 2012. Hitchcock’s outline of the growth of the Roman Catholic Church is a beautiful compact history. He describes the development of doctrine and liturgy and places these in the history of the day. His explanations are clear and precise. He doesn’t go into a lot depth but includes a bibliography for each chapter for readers who want additional explanation and scope. I am amazed at how readable this book is and how the author managed to include so much in just 500 pages. Excellent… (mais)

1139 The Decline and Fall of Radical Catholicism, by James Hitchcock (read 8 Nov 1971) This book says much well, but it is too generalized, sweeping, non-careful. I liked much; e.g., "Radicals often urge that money spent on religion should be used for the poor. Rarely do they suggest this same use for money spent on books and records, liquor and marijuana, sensitivity training, and travel." I'd like to see every priest read the book--maybe it'd save the vocations of some.
