Tony Hodgson's book is exactly what it says - a collection of good food stories. Nineteen brief snapshots, mainly from the UK, but including a worldwide perspective, offer some really effective comment on good food practice. "All are driven by the desire to eat food which is healthy and, as far as is possible, seasonal, which has not travelled long distances and which tastes really good" (p. 28). "There is a gradual dawning that the Western indiustrialised brand of farming may not be the panacea that it was thought to be" (p. 113). "Each choice we make about what we eat and drink can make a world of diference" p. 121). These three comments offer a fair flavour of the gist of a book which explores so many different ways in which we can engage with good food, including farmers' markets, co-operatives, small independent retailers and good growing practice. It offers some fascinating insights into the challenges, opportunities and benefits of rural communities, particularly, though not exclusively, with regard to the food they offer our tables.… (mais)
