I really liked this one. Content Warning for past parental neglect, past threat of child abuses.

Rich is a closed-off, angry, defensive man who, with the help of Patrick, a man who doesn't back down and can sense issues below Rich's surface, starts to understand why his life is small, and how to maybe venture out. My one real quibble is for some of the skips forward in time, when I had no sense of passing time otherwise. It's not very important, it just bugs me enough to note. It's sexcapades early on. The romance is a slower burn, and uneven, and I loved that. And the last lines are perfect.… (mais)

I mean, it has some redeeming features. I could finish reading it, unlike #1. But unlike #2, this novel lacks the final polishing edit that could've made it at least as good as #2 was for me. The potential's there, the central abuse and that it happened to a boy, that was unique and important. And some passages are so good. But the inferior editing is splashed all over, distracting from what was well done. There are serious fails, like: the man with the pair of serious head wounds did NOT just "slam" his head back, even on a padded workout bench. And incidental fails, like: all, ALL, the couches are "fluffy." The chunks of catch-up from previous books are clunky. Many of the internal summings-up bits are, too. There are numerous goofy phrases... Really, this needed another edit pass and didn't get it, and it's tragic.

But the worst part? Is the scene in chapter twenty-eight. I think in the arena of Stupid Romance Tropes, it's like in the top three worst when handled poorly. This one was as unreasonable as that off-camera monster that "somehow" sneaks up on the good guys.

If you think your readers don't track this stuff, you must not be a reader yourself. Or you're a terribly cursory one.

Addison is the best character in this book. Read it for her.

The Perfect Shine is about a lot of things, but I think what stood out most for me, is that it’s about figuring out who you are, and I will always read the hell out of that kind of story

This book follows Jackson Meade and his best friend Blake Renault. From the day they first meet in high school, it’s clear that there’s a connection between them despite their differences. Sweet, befuddled, bullied, unusual Jackson in his skinny jeans and band t-shirts is surprised when popular, tattooed, soccer playing Blake seems to want to be friends with him. That’s what this book is all about though, the connections that we make with people who may not be the same as us… the non-judgemental kind of love and friendship we all need.

I think this story also reminds us that we shouldn’t be drawing conclusions about who people are, what they think, what kind of life they’re living… based on how they look. Life can be pretty confusing without us all making assumptions about each other.

As this lovely friendship blossoms, Blake creates a buffer safe zone around Jackson with his unconditional support and it’s a very new thing for Jackson. He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t much like to touch people, and he’s not really social, preferring his own company.

There are things going on in Blake’s life that make his home life untenable and big-hearted Meredith (Jackson’s mom) takes him in. No spoilers here, people!

As the two young men grow and change, they find themselves off on different paths even though they are still inexplicably drawn to each other. For one… the attraction is confusing and terrifying, for the other, it’s just how he’s always felt. The book is about how they figure that out and what will become of their friendship once they do.

I loved this book. I want to cuddle it. Honestly, the relationship between Blake and Jackson made my heart feel all warm and fuzzy. Did you ever want a friend who would kind of just show up, and be … everything?

Reading this made me feel good and it made me miss my best friend. Please write more dear author.

4.5⭐️ Very good paranormal mystery! Titus is an interesting character, his gypsy heritage was fascinating and a different twist on the psychic and the cop trope. I enjoyed the interplay between him and his grandmother and his grandmother and Charlie. While this mystery was solved, the ending left an opening for more stories featuring Charlie and Titus - I would definitely pick them up.
