After a long absence, Carole Howey is back with a previously unreleased historical romance -- and it may be her best yet. Summer Olden is determined to retire from the stage -- which may seem like the typical Victorian retreat into domesticity, but is actually her exercising her own will and opinions for the first time in a life that's been overdetermined by her theatrical parents and then controlling manager. She literally knows no better than seeing a potential marriage to a wealthy elderly man as her only option -- until she learns not only about love, but also friendship and self-determination for the first time. Seeing Summer learn to understand herself and to let others into her life, with some bumps along the way, is an enjoyable ride. Sam Ryers, the skeptical lawyer, is a really appealing love interest, himself damaged by his past but willing to learn to love. His sister Lydia is another standout character.
