This book is an excellent overview and guide for GLBTQ teens. At a time when the nation is suffering an epidemic of LGBTQ youth suicides due to bullying, this is a book that could likely be helpful for many kids feeling that it can't get better. But it is a book not only for teens, but for the adults as well who need to get a sense of what it is these kids go through for in addition to the usual pressures and changes of becoming a teen, LGBTQ youths also face the challenge of coming to terms with their sexual orientation. This is something adults need to understand as well.

The book is very easily organized into chapters from basics in "GLBTQ 101" to "Work, College, and Beyond." Though you can read it cover to cover, the book certainly lends itself to reading the chapters you need. Is the reader dealing with the issue of coming out? There is a chapter on the topic that provides questions with answers as well as lists of information and support resources. The decision to come out is not an easy one, and the book gives information and facts to help make an informed decision regardless of whether the LGBTQ reader decides to come out or not; there is no tone of pressure for either view. Chapters are divided in short, easy to read sections. There are also information boxes with various lists of resources and places to find support and information. Additionally, the book integrates short stories of youths to let readers know that they are not alone, that others have faced the same questions.

This is a book that should be in every library, especially school libraries. And it needs to be visible so teens can find it. When I ordered it for our academic library, I was asked "who the hell is going to come read or check out that book?" Though I was tempted to give a pretty snarky answer, in the end I said two reasons. One, because we may have young people, including some of our young students, who may need such a book. Two, because we do have a School of Education, and future teachers should be reading this book to get some awareness; very often, young people will come out or at least confide in a teacher they feel comfortable with. This book is also for them. So, I went ahead and ordered it anyways. In the end, this is an excellent tool for any LGBTQ youth, but it is also an excellent tool to educate others. I highly recommend it.

This book was originally published in 2003 and has now been revised and updated to more accurately reflect the current state of LGBTQ acceptance and concerns, including several legislative issues such as Don't Ask, Don't Tell and gay marriage. It discusses topics such as homophobia, coming out, school situations, friends, dating, religion, work, college, and more. So many areas are covered all in a manner reflecting teen experiences and points of view. This is the perfect resource for a high school student dealing with LGBTQ issues and for anyone else who wants to learn more about LGBTQ individuals and what they go through. Advice and personal stories by teens dealing with similar issues are included throughout the book and help to make it even more relevant for teens.

I picked this book because it is a perfect resource for any teen that may be having questions about their sexuality. The best part is that it has true stories that teens have gone through so the reader can relate and know they are not the only one. The book tackles a lot of different subjects for example: coming out, staying healthy, life at school and tons more. It is information that someone may need in order to accept what they are going through and know what is best for themselves.

In this very informative nonfiction book, Huegel discusses the many issues facing GLBTQ teens. She begins by explaining in language that teens will understand what GLBTQ is, that it’s okay to be questioning and to take the necessary time to figure out your sexual identity, and explains stereotypes associated with GLBTQ culture. In addition, Huegel discusses confronting homophobia, friends, surviving school, depression, drugs/alcohol and even religion from a GLBTQ view point. This book is a wonderful resource for teens who are either gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning, but it’s also a helpful resource for straight teens that have friends that are GLBTQ. Through out this book, Huegel adds quotes from other teens who are GLBTQ, has important information like suicide hotlines in highlighted boxes and includes an extensive list of resources for GLBTQ teens. This book shows that teens who are GLBTQ are not alone.

Librarians can display this book or add it to a booklist, along with other GLBTQ, resources for teens.

GLBTQ: The Survival Guide for Queer and Questioning Teens is a well-organized and thorough resource for teens coming to terms with their sexual or gender identity. Chapters are organized thematically, covering fears or concerns (sex, homophobia) or environments (school, family). The audience is specifically queer or questioning teens (not allies) who are directly dealing with these issues and offer specific formatting to identify web and print resources, phone numbers and other opportunities for more information. “Been There” bubbles highlight quotes from other LGBTQ teens on their experiences, and dialogs are even written out to help teens plan coming out talks, or conversations with girl or boyfriends. GLBTQ is written like a letter but organized like a textbook. Recommended for any YA non-fiction collection, in school or public libraries.… (mais)
