About the Author

Christopher Isherwood, born in Cheshire, England, in 1904, wrote both novels and nonfiction. He was a lifelong friend of W.H. Auden and wrote several plays with him, including Dog Beneath the Skin and The Ascent of F6. He lived in Germany from 1928 until 1933 and his writings during this period mostrar mais described the political and social climate of pre-Hitler Germany. Isherwood immigrated to the United States in 1939 and became a U.S. citizen in 1946. He lived in California, working on film scripts and adapting plays for television. The musical Cabaret is based on several of Isherwood's stories and on his play, I Am a Camera. His other works include Mr. Norris Changes Trains, about life in Germany in the early 1930s; Down There on a Visit, an autobiographical novel; and Where Joy Resides, published after his death in 1986. Adorei o livro Adeus a Berlim, do Christopher Isherwood, que foi editado, numa edição muito bonita, pela Quetzal. Que já tinha editado o Homem Singular, pelo que podemos ter esperança de vir a ter mais títulos do Isherwood traduzidos e editados em português.

O livro é magnífico, muito bem escrito, com uma ironia poderosa e uma atenção quase obsessiva pelos pormenores e pelas personagens de que vai ser feita a passagem de Isherwood pela cidade de Berlim, entre 1930 e 1933. Claro que estão aqui presentes todas as personagens de Cabaret, o filme de Bob Fosse, e de I Am a Camera, o filme de Henry Cornelius que adaptou estas histórias de Berlim para cinema em 1955.

O que é mais fantástico no livro, para além do gozo da mestria narrativa do autor, é perceber como Isherwood vai tecendo os vários fios de que se faz a sua narrativa, sempre de uma forma eficaz e subtil, para que o relato da experiência pessoal do narrador (o próprio Isherwood, que o livro de faz das suas vivências pessoais), marcado pelo desejo do mundo e por um evidente mas nunca explícito olhar homossexual, vá dando lugar a um retrato eficaz de uma sociedade feérica e contraditória, vibrante e cheia de fragilidades, o cadinho onde, de forma progressivamente mais impositiva, vai surgindo o pesadelo nazi.
