War is indeed heck for a sickly, erudite company clerk in the Confederate Army of Tennessee's Orphan Brigade (Kentucky Infantry) as he travel from Shiloh to Vicksburg, Chickamauga and on to Atlanta. Jackman's diary does an excellent job of describing the day to day trials and tribulations of the rebel enlisted ranks with many a wry, ironic observation along the way. Great little book.
