Adrian Johnston

Continental philosophy is widely disparaged as both impenetrable and incapable of technical sophistication - the worst of both linguistic worlds. Much of it conforms to these low expectations. Zizek specifically has a tendency to come off as somewhat of a clown, and these are low (or high) expectations he obviously relishes. None of these qualities apply to Adrian Johnston's work here on consciousness. I can only take on faith (and the more famous philosopher's endorsement) that this is what the title claims it to be, but I can give my own testimony that this is a fascinating and admirably clear work whose difficulty is solely a function of the subject matter. My only criticism is that Johnston's engagement with eliminativism seems somewhat shallow.… (mais)
