In March 1960, the University of Hawai'i Music Department held open house for the new music buildings. The program was presented in three parts. The first part consisted of the Edith Stern lecture on Ancient Hawaiian Music.

The lecture was illustrated with slides furnished by Dr. Emory of the bishop Museum and by the lecturer. Excerpts of chants from Bishopp Museum records, were played. Dance demonstrations were provided by Eleanor Hiram and her two daughters.

The lecture, altered vrey slightly and extended a little by the addtiton of some poems, some musical examples and footnotes, is presenteed here in print.
