A short novel in three parts, following the first colony mission to another star on a multi-generational starship. The novel plods through three phases of story - launch, flight, and arrival. The dialog stumps through extensive exposition, and the characters are generally pretty flat. Fortunately for the crew and mission, there are few significant crises, but that leaves readers with the risk of dying of boredom.

The promise of the Springer Science and Fiction series is that the novels are well researched, and as scientifically plausible as possible, and The Protos Mandate certainly has it's base in solid ideas. The book as an appendix that explains the authors thinking and research within the novel, although the thorough exposition in the novel covers a lot of what he expands on.

I'm a big fan of the multi-generational space ship genre, but this well researched novel isn't one of the best. Read it if you like scientifically rigorous fiction.
