About the Author

Ahmed Kathrada was elected to Parliament in 1994 and served as President Mandela's parliamentary counselor. He now serves on the Board of Trustees for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, which promotes nonracial thinking.

I had always thought that this book was a collection of letters written by Nelson Mandela but it turns out they are by a fellow prisoner, Ahmed Kathrada. The letters cover the time from their trial in 1964 until Mr. Kathrada's release in 1989. They give a good view of life in both Robben Island, where they first were, and Pollsmoor Maximum Prison where they were toward the end of their time in prison. In addition, the letters include frequent philosophical comments that give insight into how Kathrada managed to endure twenty-five years in maximum security prison and come out with little, if any bitterness, and just take up life. Like Mandela, Kathrada was politically active after prison, serving in the South African parliament. Even twenty-five years after their release I found this to be a most worthwhile read.… (mais)

After seeing the film Invictus, I wanted to know more about Nelson Mandela. This work, a coffee table, large format hagiography, contains a brief biography and is loaded with historical images of his life and the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Intermingled are reminiscences by famous and anonymous individuals who have known Mandela throughout his long life. He has an incredible will to live, and one of the great smiles of our age, all after 27 years in a South African prison! To go from a prison cell to the Presidency of his nation is an extraordinary journey, and Mandela is one of the titans of our age who harkens back to the time when great leaders strode the world stage.… (mais)
