About the Author

Known in Iran as a leading mathematician, Omar gained literary importance through certain quatrains that were translated by Edward FitzGerald. The Ruba'iyat is justly famous in English translation. Others besides FitzGerald have tried their hand at translating it, not all with admired results. mostrar mais Bowens's is a good example of competent and pleasing work. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: Khorasan Edition em Tattered but still lovely (Setembro 2012)

Mostly typical Eastern stuff--flies wittily past, leaving the dull tang of aphorisms in the air. A few interesting bits, but one suspects any charm is stricly Fitzgerald’s. I wonder why he bothered?

12/22/12 - A second reading much improved my appreciation for this work. I'm not sure what it is that's changed, but it's obviously me and not the poem.

This edition contains both the first and fifth editions of Fitzgerald's translation as well as an introduction. Although normally I don't read introductions (and on the rare cases when I do, it is usually after reading the book instead of before), in this case I did read the intro & recommend it to anyone like myself who is unfamiliar with Persian literature.

I also recommend the fifth edition as a bit more modern in tone. If you don't want to read both, I would just read the fifth edition.… (mais)

If you love poetry, then this is a must-read. Omar Khayyam was absolutely brilliant.
Nevertheless, I could summarize the full Rubaiyat in one line:
Drink more wine. There is no afterlife. Be happy in this life.

But hey, who reads poetry for anything but pleasure, right? It's never in the point.
