A stupendous volume. This is the book you want to read right away but honestly can't get much out of. Coming out of the first 4 volumes of Kim's series into this one sets the reader up perfectly for all the lessons it contains. You get all the good stuff here: opening principles, good shape, joseki, and endgame. Best of all this volume is a true culmination of previous texts so you feel a sense of preparedness for these concepts that I imagine dominate the remainder of study (at least in their foundational elements).

Highly recommended but only read as a continuation of the series.

I was so ready for this book in the series. Finally, very practical topics such as invasion and reduction, running battles, and capturing races. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a better method of teaching the elementary aspects of Go. In places the language is a little awkward but overall I highly recommend this series to anyone just starting out.

Well after taking the quiz I scored at the very top of "Average" which means I must have learned something from this book but the lessons were so subtle and so short (most of this volume is commentary on demonstrative games) that I can't be certain. There are still many tactical concepts mentioned quickly here that I need to either work out for myself or see explained in detail. Overall this book left me feeling less confident about concepts which go beyond basic tactics but it did fill in a poetic aspect to the game, which is part of why I am so enamored.… (mais)
