Fun retrospective, should be read with 'The Retro Cocktail Hour' playing in the background.

I had no idea the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu was run my LDS??? No wonder I never went when I had the chance.

Well done, another Taschen classic.

A big coffee table book of tiki culture, with a special focus on the art. The authors were instrumental in the revival of tiki culture and include their own histories in putting together gallery shows and tiki newsletters in the 90's, and in gathering people who became well-known in tiki culture.

This is a beautiful book that looks back at the history of tiki from the 1930's to the 70's, especially in architecture, and also much that is currently happening, and features the works from artists who make their living in tiki culture. 5 stars!… (mais)

Not nearly as compelling as the later, easier-to-obtain (hence less expensive) Tiki Pop. I'd erroneously assumed that Tiki Modern was going to be about the latest flowering of Tiki, but no, it's about the classic Tiki period. Tiki Pop covers the ground in more, better detail. Half of this book is really a salute to Witco, a company that specialized in chainsaw carvings of tiki scuplture/furniture. If you read Tiki Pop, this is emininently skippable.

This is a Very Large (dimensionally, not in terms of pages, though it's substantial in that dept. too!) book, richly illustrated, and yet with enough text to feel that you're definitely learning about the subject, and not just reading captions for a picture book. I've learned so much about the subject--it's pretty definitive unless you're looking for an unillustrated, purely academic dissertation on the subject ... but what fun would that be?

(Note: 5 stars = rare and amazing, 4 = quite good book, 3 = a decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. There are a lot of 4s and 3s in the world!)… (mais)
