Event Date: Friday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. Former Dean of the College of Humanities, feminist literary critic and activist Annette Kolodny offers a radically new approach to the longstanding debate about whether Leif Eiriksson or Christopher Columbus was the first European to “discover” (i.e., make first contact with) North America. Her book compares the saga stories of the Norse attempt at colonization of the place they called Vinland with Native American stories of first contacts with Europeans. Her talk asks why the nineteenth-century Woman’s Rights movement took sides in the raging national debate over whether Leif Eiriksson or Christopher Columbus should be honored as “first discoverer.” For those nineteenth-century feminists, what was at stake in the “discovery” debate was both their sexual and their political freedom.
