Author William Lach adds to a Metropolutan Museum of Art Collection Series in the tradition of Classical paintings and music by portraying a multisensory journey for younger readers. This introduction to the arts uses music (an attached CD) and paintings in the book to guide the reader with both auditory and visual stimuli throughout. Musical tracks such as The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens is paired with visual masterpieces such as Ocean Life by Christian Schussele to give the reader a double dose of beautiful orchestrations and timely depictions of nature and history. The book starts with three pages towards the introduction of musical instruments (strings, percussion, brass, woodwinds). This book was amazing. The illustrations, language, and personification of the flowers kept me so engaged in the book and I loved it. The book was about flowers and gave factual information about them by portraying them as "friends" of the main character and personifying them to be like people with characteristics. The personification of the flowers kept me as a reader so interested in the story and definitely would be great for children. You are able to learn about flowers and plants in a super fun way. I also loved the language of this book because it was all written in rhyme and used great vocabulary. Each page was only a short line or two that rhymes with the next page and tells you about a different plant. I really liked the page "Prickly Pear cactus can give a scare until you get to know him. Azalea wears a shirt so bright it almost seems to glow him." Lastly, I really liked the illustrations. They gave the flowers faces and clothing and characteristics and made the book even cuter and more fun for the reader. I loved seeing each flower as a character with eyes and smiles. The main idea of this book was that nature is amazing and complex and that we should learn about it. This book was great and I think there should be more just like this to teach other things.… (mais)

"My Friends the Flowers" was a very informative picture book. What I liked most was the flower glossary and the gardening tips in the back of the book. Although what I liked most was the back of the book, the story itself was interesting because it gave human-like characteristics to the flowers. For example, "Marigold scares all the bugs. He likes to make them run." the author used this to explain that marigold flower's have roots that are poisonous to certain bugs. The big picture of this book was to inform the reader about different types of flowers.… (mais)
