This final book in the trilogy covered a lot of territory. It is written as a series of vignettes over an extended period of time telling the reader what happened to the No Peak clan. I believe it was longer than the others, maybe a bit too long, but if I had to pick one of the three books in the series as a favorite, it would probably still be this one. Probably my favorite thing about the whole series, as well as this book, is the magic system and the kinds of skills that it gives those with the proper training. I thought that the story elements related to Perception and its use were particularly interesting, and Channeling was used very effectively as well. I had trouble finding a favorite character or two through the first two books, but I finally found one among the secondary characters in this book, and came to like some of the older characters more as well. I enjoyed the political and economic machinations as a means of competition among the clans, but I wouldn't have minded trading two or three of those stories for a bit more depth about the characters from the younger generation. This series seems to be a darling of much of the booktuber community, and I did not personally love it as much as many of them seem to, but it was still an enjoyable read and a series worth checking out if you like fantasy. And if you like urban fantasy featuring a mostly sympathetic organized crime family, you will probably love it.… (mais)

I liked this one quite a bit more than Jade City. The political intrigue was really interesting and there were many intense moments that kept me wanting to read on. I still don't feel as engaged with the individual characters as I would prefer, but there are enough satisfying moments and an interesting enough story line to make this an enjoyable read.

This was enjoyable enough for me to decide to read the second book in the series, but I did not find that it made me want to keep reading at the end of chapters, which is what I usually would expect of a book rated four stars or more. I have never been a great fan of organized crime stories, so that has likely affected my opinion.

The strengths were the writing, which was excellent, and a very interesting magic system based on the interaction between jade and the DNA of a particular group of people. I liked the concept of the inherent dangers of wielding the power of jade. There was some political drama that added additional depth.

The main weakness for me was that I had trouble finding a character that I liked enough to be invested in their story. There were several with redeeming qualities that I kept thinking might ultimately draw me in, but I mostly found myself siding with the Kaul family only because the other one seemed so terrible by comparison. The second book shows higher ratings than the first, so I am hoping that as the characters' stories develop, I will find that I am more invested in their success.

4.5 stars.

Just the right mix of intrigue, drama, and action for me.

I love rooting for the Kaul family as they claw their way back from defeat after defeat. The characters are distinctive and charming, the stakes are both personal and far-reaching, and even the politics are pretty interesting.
