I don't really do self-help books, to be honest. I find most of them to be the same old same old, just wrapped up in new wording with a new cover (lately, most also have the word "Fuck" in the title, too, cuz...you know...edgy or something...)

But two things captured my attention with this one. The first is the obvious one...Bruce Lee (and how is it that he'll have been gone 50 years in just over a month from now, on July 20, 2023?).

The second thing that captured me is the idea that I've heard connected with Lee many times, the "be water" method of approach to everything.

Are there times when Shannon Lee maybe stretches this analogy a bit thin? Sure. But overall, I found the ideas in this book, absolutely worthwhile. Like every self-help book, you take a few nuggets from the text that apply to you, and you try them on.

I think the main reason the advice in this particular book sticks with me a little more than most of the stuff I've seen peddled on the market is, I recognized many of my failings in the ideas presented here. I recognized where, in attempting to adopt some of the strategies, I could very likely be a nicer, calmer, less curmudgeonly asshole.

And hey, that's the goal, right?

This was actually pretty good. This could have gone a few ways. It helped that Shannon Le wrote this and not some other person. We see a side of Bruce Lee that it isn't show often. Shannon Lee book is fairly easy read too. She made this for everyone, not just people into martial arts and sports. The key focus of this book is her explaining his philosophy. Yes, Bruce Lee was a philosopher who studied it in college and taught it as well and came up with some ideas of his own.

This is a self-help book, but at the same time it's a memoir too. I think one of the strongest parts of this book is Shannon talking about her brother's death. It clearly has been on her mind ever since. In some ways, I think the chapter is an open letter and helping her let it all out. The chapter about her father's death felt similar. She was only four when her father passed, but clearly, she cares deeply for him.

This book covers a lot of topics. It's not really a biography of Bruce Lee, since it's more of a reflection. I think I picked this up at the right time. Was getting anxious over the second vaccine, had a bad reaction to the 2nd one too, so I need a book like this to help me reflect on things. I rarely read self-help books and most of the times I don't like them because they don't help. Not going to say this book fully helped, but it did help me get in a better mindset for a while.

Bruce Lee-Wisdom for the Way is a gift. More than a gift book, it is a gift of inspiriation. We sought to bring together a book of some of my father's most inspirational and thought-provoking quotes with some beautiful and evocative images so that as you read, you are also uplifted by a visual element. The imagery consists of Bruce Lee photos, graphic elements, and symbolic pictures that are meant to help express the essence of the words on the page.

There are many books composed of my father's written words available for sale these days, but we felt it was important to make an accessible an dmanageable but also beautifully appointed collection of quotes that anyone can pick up, easily flip through and come away affected by its wisdom and beauty.… (mais)
