This pictorial history of Fort Des Moines takes the Fort from its establishment in 1843 through to today, when the majority of it has been dismantled and bull-dozed and a few remaining buildings wait to be turned into a museum. The bulk of the book features Des Moines during World War II, when it became the the major training center for the Women's Army Corps. The author's mother, Carrie Jones LeFew, was a World War II WAC, and many of the photographs from this era came from her private collection. Her husband was killed on Corregidor in the Philippines.
