Algebraic Notation
This is my favorite book for pure tactics exercises. Go over them again and again. It has the exercises and solutions, but no commentary as such.
Not for total beginners. Exercises progress from fairly easy (1300+) to much more difficult. Useful for most tournament players I think.
The book is out of print, but it is useful to hunt for a used copy.
Lein (pronounce Lane according to the NY Times) died March 1, 1028 at age 86. Here is the NY Times obit.

The font used for these puzzles is terrible, but this is still the best single collection of tactics exercises I've ever seen.
