Madeleine L'Engle Camp began writing stories, poems and journals at a young age. When she was 12, she moved with her parents to the French Alps and went to an English boarding school. She attended high school back in the USA at Ashley Hall in Charleston, South Carolina, vacationing with her mother in an old cottage on Florida Beach.

She majored in English at Smith College and graduated with honors in 1941. She moved into an apartment in Greenwich Village in New York, worked in the theater, and published her first two novels, A Small Rain (1945) and Ilsa (1946). In 1946, she married Hugh Franklin, an actor, whom she met while an understudy in Anton Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard. The couple moved to Connecticut to raise their family on a small dairy farm village with more cows than people; they later returned to New York City with three children. Madeleine began an association with the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, where she was the librarian and maintained an office for more than 30 years. She produced more than 60 books during her career.

When Simon’s ancient aunt sells her valuable Simón Bolívar painting to a distant cousin, Simon accompanies the cousin on a boat to Venezuela, where the cousin plans to return it to its original owner. His aunt raised him, and he very much lives in the past—a boy from the wrong era. On the boat a lot happens: he befriends 2 children accompanying their scientist father, the painting is stolen, and there’s a murder. Arriving at the Port of Dragons, even more happens: Simon is kidnapped and left to die, his aunt flies to Venezuela and ends up staying with an ancient tribe in the forest who are key to everything, and not everyone is who they claim to be. This is very much a precursor to A Wrinkle in Time, especially given the makeup of the main characters (a 14-yo girl Poly and her “special” younger brother Charles, friend 13-yo Simon, & the scientist father).… (mais)

The birth of Jesus was a Glorious Impossible. Like love, it cannot be explained, it can only be rejoiced in. And that is what master storyteller Madeleine L'Engle does in this compellingly written narrative, inspired by Giotto's glorious frescoes from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. With a simple clarity that illuminates the life of Christ, Madeleine L'Engle give eloquent voice to the miracle of God's love.

I didn't purchase this book, I won it...however, I would have bought it eventually. But I didn't have to, so woo-hoo for me! Now, to the review:

I enjoyed this book quite a bit! Being that it was first published about 50 years ago, I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was hooked from, "It was a dark and stormy night."

The story is centered around Meg and Charles who (along with their friend, Calvin) are looking for their father. The kids are helped by an amazing cast of characters (including Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, and Aunt Beast), some of whom can actually morph into other creatures. Evidently, dad has successfully traveled through time and space and is trapped somewhere far, far away by a force from which he cannot escape - a force which, it seems, can hijack your mind and alter your sense of reality. Meg is the older sister to Charles - who has special, and perhaps unnerving, gifts. "Ordinary" Meg seems to feel inferior because of this and sometimes doubts herself. These gifts Charles has may put him in danger on their quest to reclaim their father, however. Can Meg save him? Can she save them both? You will have to read it to find out because I am not going to tell you. Heheheh.

There were several allusions made to biblical texts and principles throughout the book. I have no problem with this - I read the Bible. It's the only book I read every day. I did have a little issue with the author equating Jesus with famous, dead philosophers, scientists, composers - great men, but men nonetheless. If you are a Christian (as I am), you might take issue with this as well - as if the author is suggesting that Christ was not divine. I've read that Madeleine L'Engle was a Christian, so I wonder if this was actually the intention. However, aside from this one thing, I enjoyed the book enough to give it four stars.
