Jella Lepmann

„Die Kinderbuchbrücke“ ist ein einzigartiges Projekt, das die emigrierte Jüdin Jella Lepman nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg angestoßen hatte: Sie kam als Beraterin in die amerikanische Zone und entwickelte die Idee, dass den deutschen Kindern (neben dem Lebensnotwendigen) mit Büchern geholfen werden müsste, um andere Völker kennenzulernen, neue Werte zu entdecken und ihre Fantasie anzuregen – Bücher als Nahrung für den Geist. Beginnend mit Spenden aus allen Ländern baute sie ihre Ausstellung aus, aus der später die Internationale Jugendbibliothek in der Münchner Kaulbachstraße erwuchs und auch der deutsche Kinder- und Jugendliteraturpreis. Ich wusste darüber gar nichts und fand das Buch sehr interessant. Die Bilder mit den lesenden und sich vertiefenden Kindern sind sehr rührend.… (mais)

Justo antes de la II Guerra Mundial, Jella Lepman, escritora y periodista alemana de origen judío, vio cómo ardían en la hoguera infinidad de libros: los nazis consideraban la lectura como una actividad peligrosa. Lepman huyó de Alemania con sus hijos y comenzó una nueva vida en Inglaterra. Al término de la guerra, regresó a su país para trabajar como asesora del ejército americano en la reeducación de las mujeres y los niños. Lepman encontró una Alemania devastada, cerrada en sí misma, y comprendió la urgente necesidad de abrir la mirada de los niños y jóvenes al mundo exterior a través de los libros.… (mais)

After making her home in England for several years, Mrs. Lepman returned to Germany after World War II to work for the American occupation on women’s and children’s issues. There, she conceived the idea of first an exhibition and then a permanent International Youth Library, barreling ahead with the scantiest of official permission and often no money at all. The narrative structure of the book is not as easy to follow as I’m used to, but the evocation of the time and place is quite moving, and her enthusiasm for children’s books is catching. Her mention of conflicts with more traditional librarians is interesting to scholars of library history; the IYL looks very much like our current idea of a proper library for children, but it’s easy to forget what a radical idea it was then.… (mais)
