I liked this book well enough. I enjoyed how well versed the author was with the times. the characters were easy to become invested in and care about but I would have liked a little more dimension to them. The ending seemed rushed to me. we spend 2/3rds of the book exploring a handful of years and then fast forward atleast 20. All that said I would easily pick up the next one if it became available to me.

Have you ever wondered how Mary might have felt when she met the angel? Have you questioned if Mary and Joseph truly loved each other? Have you tried to imagine the world where they lived, with its customs and culture and mores? Author E. G. Lewis offers insight into all of these, through a beautifully crafted short novel of a world not so long ago, not so far away. The characters feel hauntingly real, from first meeting to last. Cousin Elizabeth has a delightfully honest amazement at late pregnancy. Zechariah the taciturn is a pleasing side character. Parents and friends weave in and out of the story with honest concern. And Mary the teenager has so much to learn.

Details are beautifully researched, powerfully convincing, and never overwhelming in this tale. The author balances fact and fiction perfectly, building an authentic world, and revealing a story-behind-the-story that draws the reader in, no matter how well we think we know the tale.

Life is a journey, and many journeys are taken along this road. But there’s one destination, one promise, and one nativity so well-imagined I’ll never be able to see it in another way. Thank you E. G. Lewis for an almost perfect pre-Christmas read!

Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy and I offer my honest review.

Lost
Military secrets, corruption, greed, international intrigue; tenderness, human frailty, devotion, and loyalty. All of these describe Lost by E.G. Lewis. A wide and varied cast of characters are intricately woven together in this very satisfying mystery that is a follow up to Promises. However, Lost totally stands on its own two feet, and although some characters from the first book make an appearance, it is not necessary to read book one in order to enjoy book two. The main character from Promises, Claudia Monet, has an important role to play, but the primary character by far is a loveable, albeit crusty, newspaper man named Tom Jenkins. He’s a semi-retired Vietnam war vet, living in a small Oregon town. When his wife goes missing while on board a cruise ship bound for Alaska, Tom begins to investigate the ship’s strange disappearance, and thus the roller coaster ride of conspiracy begins.
There are a lot of really interesting elements to this book. Snatches of Sc-fi co-exist quite naturally with the breathtaking descriptions of the Oregon scenery, while touching glimpses into the emotional make up of the characters flow seamlessly into scenes of high intensity action. It’s a mystery, romance, action, thriller rolled into one. Implausible though the premise of the story might be, it still comes across as very believable, due in part to the well developed characters and obvious research that went into many aspects of the book. I highly recommend this book to readers looking for a great mystery.

PROMISES by E.G. Lewis was certainly not what I was expecting, and in this case that is a good thing! Rather than a fluffy romance, I got a well written novel with substance. Sure, there was romance, but this book is so much more than that. It is the epic journey of a woman who rises above the trials of life to become the person she was meant to be all along. It starts when Mary Jane is just 15, on the eve of her mother’s funeral. From there it takes us through her struggles at home and at college, first love, more tragedy, success, fame, fortune, betrayal, revenge … pretty much the whole gamut of human emotion! At first glance, this list almost sounds trite, but Lewis’s writing is so provocative, so descriptive, so in tune with the human psyche, that this book is anything but cliché. He draws us into MJ’s world with such craft and precision that before you know it you just have to keep reading. PROMISES turned out to be a very satisfying read, indeed. I highly recommend it.… (mais)
